About Kathryn Borg and Highley Crafted

I am a ceramics artist based in Derbyshire.

I got my first proper taste of ceramics at upper school in Bradford, I had an excellent teacher, who really encouraged and supported me with this medium.

From there I went to Bradford College for 2 years to do a BTEC National in ceramics. I learnt so many handbuilding and decoration techniques, glazing and firing, it was a great learning experience for me.

I then went to Derby University for 3 years to do a BA (Hons) Degree in Applied Arts specialising in Ceramics.

In 2005 I became a pottery/ ceramics tutor with Derby City Council, Adult Learning Service and have been teaching pottery with them ever since. I find this position thoroughly enjoyable, to be able to share my skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for this craft is very rewarding.

My work is concentrated on functional forms inspired by the natural world. I want my pieces to be functional, but also be aesthetically pleasing. I use a variety of techniques including pinching, coiling and moulding and use glazes and coloured clays to compliment these forms. I love the way that glaze flows and clay marbles to create different details and patterns to represent the earth.

I really enjoy the time spent in my workshop, creating my pieces, I find it relaxing, therapeutic, creative and rewarding. I love the medium of clay, its many techniques and how it can be transformed into many different forms, be that either functional or sculptural.

I really love what I do, there are still so many techniques to discover and try and I’m still constantly developing my work.
